Brabec is the co-author with his twin brother Todd (Executive Vice President of ASCAP) of the book "MUSIC, MONEY, AND SUCCESS: The Insider's Guide To Making Money In The Music Industry" (Schirmer Trade Books/Music Sales) and has been awarded the Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music journalism. Previously, he has been Vice President of Business Affairs for The PolyGram Music Group and Director of Business Affairs for both The Welk Music Group and Arista-Interworld Music Group. A graduate of New York University School of Law, he has also been a government legal services attorney. Brabec, a former recording artist and songwriter, is an adjunct professor at USC Thornton School of Music/Music Business Department, guest lecturer teaching music publishing for Berklee College of Music, and contributing editor to the Entertainment Law & Finance Magazine. Todd Brabec, former Executive Vice President and Director of Worldwide Membership for ASCAP, is the co-author (with his brother Jeff, Vice President of Business Affairs for Chrysalis Music Group) of the best selling music business book Music Money and Success: the Insiders Guide to Making Money in the Music Business (6th edition/Schirmer Books/505 pages). He is an Entertainment Law attorney, a music licensing, royalty and business management consultant, an Adjunct Associate Professor at the USC Thornton School of Music where he teaches the course on music publishing, music licensing and film, television and videogame scoring and song contracts, a guest lecturer teaching the music publishing/licensing course for Berklee College of Music and is a Governing Committee Member as well as former Music and Budget Chair of the American Bar Association's Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries. During his long career at ASCAP, he was responsible for all Membership operations, policies, personnel, offices, songwriter, composer and music publisher signings and dealings, advances and loans, foreign society dealings and competitive systems and payments analysis and implementation resulting in ASCAP's annual income increasing from 60 million dollars to 1 billion dollars, a market share increase from less than a 25% share to market share dominance in every major media and a membership increase from 30,000 members to 375,000 writers and publishers. He has over 300 articles published and lectures extensively on all aspects of the business, legal and money side of music. Ned Hearn’s practice concentrates on intellectual property and business matters related to creative artists and media-based companies, with a focus on the entertainment, internet, and computer software businesses and their convergence, intersecting content, media, and technology in the digital internet environment, including: recording, production, and publishing; multi-media and internet web-based productions; digital distribution and repurposing of content; licensing, distribution, and marketing; copyright and trademark matters; merchandising; sponsorships; film, television, video productions; options, scoring, and soundtracks; content syndications; literary publishing, including fiction and technical and professional non-fiction; clearances for use of intellectual property in all forms of media; talent services negotiating and contracting; strategic alliances; content catalog sales and purchases; business start-ups and development; private financing; and private mergers and acquisitions of content and media-based companies. His clients include record labels, music publishers, book publishers, traditional and Internet-based media, production, technology, and content distribution companies; webcasting companies; recording artists, writers, producers, managers, authors, software designers, and multimedia product and website developers. Mr. Hearn has co-authored The Musician’s Guide to Copyright and The Musician’s Business and Legal Manual (revised 8th version, 2007, Prentice Hall), and has published many articles and has presented at many professional and industry-based seminars. |
