AIMP PANELS

March 8, 2017

Time: 5:30 - 7:00PM

AIMP 2017 Creative Panel Sessions

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at music supervision? For this two-part AIMP creative panel, we'll select a broadcast advertisement and a scene from a popular television series (minus the music) and let you, the participant, select the perfect soundtrack. You can propose existing songs, you can submit an original score, or you can submit an original lyric song. We’ll also provide a platform for you to put your selections to picture.

At the first panel (March 8th, 2017), you'll review the spots themselves, and you’ll receive the exact same creative brief that was issued to the music supervisors who worked on them. Ad agency Droga5’s Mike Ladman & Ryan Barkan (Chase Bank, Under Armour, Uniqlo, Google, etc.), Bonfire Collective’s Stephanie Diaz-Matos (Lost, Smash, The Get Down) and Michael Hill (Nurse Jackie, Bored To Death, Flesh & Bone, Divorce, Blunt Talk, etc.) will give you insights into how they approach finding the perfect soundtrack for their projects, both from a creative and an administrative perspective. You’ll learn what goes on behind the scenes as well, and what the specific criteria are when making a song licensing decision: Creative fit, input from others involved in the process, budget, turnaround time, demographics, client-specific goals for the resulting spot, etc. You’ll also learn basic music editing processes from SynchTank’s Joel Jordan, including how to synchronize songs to picture.

You’ll have just over a month to select a short-list of up to three songs (either selected or composed for the spot, entirely up to you) that you feel best meet the specific needs of the spot given the brief. We’ll supply a web-based platform for submissions and for putting the music to picture. Select panel members will be available to answer questions during the interim as well.

At the second panel (April 18th, 2017), we'll select a short-list of the best submissions and critique them for you in real time, with Mike, Stephanie, Ryan & Michael giving you feedback based on all the criteria discussed during the first panel. We'll discuss how well the choices meet the creative needs of the spot, how the lyrics, melody, arrangement and production work to picture, and whether or not the music choices represent the right marriage of visual and sound to make the spot a success. The best submissions in each category (song selection, original score & original song) will win a one-on-one lunch with our esteemed panelists.
