You Wrote A Song ... Now What? An In-Depth Discussion On Music Publishing

 

 

The AIMP presents an in-depth introduction to music publishing. Topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing Rights Organizations  - who they are and what they do
  • Synchronization licensing 
  • Compulsory mechanical licensing and digital service providers
  • Copyright registrations 

M.I. students and AIMP members are welcome to attend and there is no charge.  But please do RSVP in advance on our site so we can have an accurate head count for the event.  

Please note that entrance to the concert hall is off McFadden Place, not Hollywood Blvd.

Steven Ambers recently joined SOCAN but, prior to that, was the Managing Director of GSO’s Royalty Department. His duties included music publishing administration. Mr. Ambers also co-founded RoyaltyTracking.com, a royalty tracking solution for monies due from downloaded intellectual property and the Royalty Review Council where he was credited with being one of the first to attempt to collect data about online sales of items ranging from music to videos in order to help copyright and trademark holders collect the royalties due them.

Teri Nelson Carpenter is a music industry veteran. Her executive experience includes a background in performing rights management and overseeing major studio & network television music departments. Her company, Reel Muzik Werks, LLC, is a full service music rights management company that specializes in global writer/publisher administration, licensing & clearance and music supervision for all media. Previously, she was Senior Vice President, Music at Fox Family Worldwide/Saban Entertainment. Prior to that Ms. Carpenter served as a Music Admin & Prod Executive at MetroGoldwyn-Mayer (MGM Studios). Before that she was the Director of Music at Hemdale Film Corp. Ms. Carpenter began her career at Broadcast Music Inc. She holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance & Composition from Cal State Long Beach where she graduated with honors. Her post graduate studies at UCLA were in International Business and she is a guest lecturer in the music department at UCLA. Ms. Carpenter is a recent two-term President of the California Copyright Conference and Finance Chair of the Board of Directors of the Copyright Alliance in Washington, D.C. Currently, Ms. Carpenter serves on the CISAC Cross Industry Joint Project Lead, CIS-net steering committee and project team as well as the Society Publisher Forum and all A/V committees.

Tim Cohan is the Senior Vice President, Legal and Business Affairs for peermusic, negotiating and drafting a range of songwriter, acquisition, licensing, joint-venture, and other agreements. In addition to handling all in-house transactional work in the United States and overseeing digital licensing worldwide, Tim is an active representative of peermusic in various industry association and committees, including as a board member of the Association of Independent Music Publishers. Tim received his B.A. in comparative literature from Williams College and a J.D. from Columbia Law School and is admitted to the Bar in New York and California.

David Weitzman has been with ole for 8 years. During his tenure at ole, David has been instrumental in facilitating deals such as the Sony Pictures Entertainment music publishing asset purchase, Timbaland catalog and futures acquisition, 2101 Songs catalog sale and Jingle Punks acquisition, among many others. David has served on the AIMP board for two terms and currently holds the position of Secretary. He believes strongly in the AIMP mission and looks forward to continuing to serve.

Frank Handy is SONGS Music Publishing’s Vice President of Licensing and Copyright. Frank oversees SONGS’ copyright functions, including synchronization licensing, mechanical licensing, sample clearance, YouTube content management, among others. Before joining SONGS Frank worked at Bug Music as a Senior Copyright Administrator managing catalogs for such acts as the Johnny Cash Estate, Ryan Adams, Wilco and many others. A lifelong musician, he played guitar in bands for more than twenty years and graduated from the Musician’s Institute of Technology guitar program with awards. Frank is a national board member of the Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP).
