10/17/19 - Music Licensing$ Today: A Complex But Understandable World (with the Brabecs)

With the use of music across all platforms at an all time high, the contracts, licenses, negotiations, considerations, fees, guarantees and “backend royalties” reflecting these uses have entered a new realm of complexity and long term significance. This panel will discuss how many of these music deals are structured and how the “economics” have, in many cases, changed dramatically for writers and publishers..  Areas covered include, among others, the multiple types of traditional film and television licenses, Netflix, Amazon and Hulu audio visual streaming services, Spotify and Pandora audio streams,  ASCAP, BMI, GMR and SESAC agreements, distribution formulas and payments, direct, source , “work-for-hire” and “buyout” licenses and agreements, video games,  mechanicals in multiple configurations, movies being made into Broadway musicals and vice versa, holograms, dramatizing songs for feature films and television series and the role that the Music Licensing Collective, the DOJ, the CRB, arbitration and voluntary negotiations play in the royalty process.
