Movie Trailers: A Vast Frontier For Music Licensing

Ever rush to the movie theatre early so you don’t miss the previews?  Trailers are it’s own unique artform produced by a completely different crew of talent than the film itself and trailers have their own separate fan base, a fan base that usually wants to buy the trailer soundtrack!  This industry faces many challenges in the changing landscape of media, technology, and budgets, yet there are some incredible opportunities for music placement in trailers and for promotional exposure of songs in trailers (i.e. Immediate Music’s track “Orchard of Mines” was on the Billboard Hot Singles Chart 9 weeks in a row).

Some of the topics that were discussed:

  • The creative and business aspects of Major or Indie song placement vs. custom scoring and library music placement
  • Different media rights and budgets for different trailers (theatrical, home video, mobile, internet, etc.)
  • Trailer soundtracks – selling the music commercially
  • Current issues and concerns about the industry
  • Changes in the way a film is marketed and how that affects music publishers

Natalie Brunt is an award-winning Trailer Editor and has been at Trailer Park, Inc. for 6 years. She works with most of the major studios, including Disney, Warner Bros., Fox, Universal, MGM and Sony/Columbia Pictures. Natalie recently worked on the theatrical campaigns for Up, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Angels and Demons, The Proposal and has an upcoming teaser for Tim Burton’s next movie Alice in Wonderland. Natalie works on all the movie genres: comedy, drama and action, except for horror, which she doesn’t have the stomach for! To her, finding the perfect piece of music for a trailer is the most exciting and exhausting part of the creative, and when she finds it, it’s gold!

Collin Perry is the Director of the Trailer Music Department for Groove Addicts, where he oversees music production, composers, licensing, and music supervision. Collin’s passion for music and film has made him an important resource for Music Supervisors as he helps them find the right music for their project or advises his composers what to write based on the needs of his clients. He’s had the honor of working on the music for amazing campaigns such as Wanted, Transformers II, Wolverine and many more.

Steve Pollard is a Co-owner of the Motion Picture Advertising Company, Workshop Creative. He’s been in the trailer business for over 15 years, and has contributed to such campaigns as: 2012, Bruno, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Marley and Me, Mamma Mia, Role Models, Cloverfield, Juno, Superbad, Get Smart, American Pie, As Good as it gets, Charlie’s Angels, Men in Black, and Spider Man.

Jordan Silverberg is an award-winning trailer music supervisor, responsible for music heard in the marketing campaigns for Lord of the Rings, Sin City, and Star Trek, amongst many others. He started his career working for The Ant Farm in 2001, where he stayed for many years, until he moved over to Aspect Ratio in 2008. Driven by a love for music, movies and trailers, Jordan is always looking to push the boundaries further, taking risks, and trying to change the world, one trailer at a time.

Phil Szanto has worked at Paramount Pictures since 2006, and in film-marketing music clearance since 2008. The bulk of his day is spent with the financials when it comes to music in trailers, reviewing quotes, creating cost and budget charts, and discussing music with senior marketing executives. Phil has worked on such campaigns as Transformers 1 & 2, Iron Man, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Indiana Jones 4, and Star Trek. He holds a bachelor's degree in film from UC Irvine.

Yoav Goren is a composer/producer and the president of Immediate Music launched in 1993 with partner, composer Jeffrey Fayman. Immediate Music has since become Hollywood’s preeminent supplier of original music for high profile, major studio feature film trailers. Immediate Music's wholly owned master recordings and publishing catalog has enjoyed over 5000 motion picture and television advertising placements, including campaigns for major blockbuster franchises such as Harry Potter, Spider-man, Pirates of the Caribbean, X-men, Transformers, Hellboy, The Mummy, and many more. Immediate Music was one of the first companies to furnish trailer houses and studios with a highly stylized cinematic sound specifically produced for trailers, most notably in its highly sought after THEMES FOR ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR series of CDs. In 2007, Yoav won an Emmy Award for music featured in NBC's broadcast of the Torino Winter Olympics.
