Music in Film: Business and Legal Opportunities in a Changing Landscape

Music in Film: Business and Legal Opportunities in a Changing Landscape

Presented by: Los Angeles County Bar Association Entertainment Law and Intellectual Property Section

Program Information:
Join members of the Entertainment Law and Intellectual Property Section and our group of esteemed panelists to discuss the creative, business, and legal decisions involved in the creation of film and television soundtracks, as well as existing and emerging opportunities for the monetization of musical assets in filmed content.

Covered topics will include:

  • Music publishing and financing deals for independent filmmakers who often sit on their untapped rights, including digital exploitation, public performance rights for theatrical motion pictures abroad, and library licensing;
  • Soundtrack deals- moneymaker, or marketing tool? Engaging (and protecting) composers and music supervisors;
  • Agreements, from basic synchronization and master use licenses, to complex overall multi-picture financing deals; standards, practices and approaches in licensing music for filmed content;

  • Royalties: where does the money go? fluctuating fees, budgetary constraints, and the challenges faced by filmmakers in balancing these hurdles with their creative vision… and more!
