Binary Code For Business: The Importance Of Data In Music Publishing

The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) reported last June that the publishing industry is worth $2.1 Billion Dollars – with a growth in streaming revenues. As streaming revenues continue to grow, with Nielsen reporting that music streaming has grown by 93% in 2015, this means more volume of music is being transmitted and consumed through various traditional, online, mobile and other media outlets and as such, more information or “data” on those uses of music is being collected and tracked.  What does this vast increase in data mean for the music publishing industry?

Music Publishers have always been data focused, analytical and detail-oriented in their finance, royalty and A&R/creative departments. How do different teams and departments within a music publisher use data differently or at all?  How have recent changes in revenues streams and the volume of music being transmitted and consumed changed the day-to-day business of a music publisher?

This panel will discuss where music publishers acquire data and how they use such data in their businesses.
