So, You're A Songwriter .... ?

A candid discussion with some cool songwriters

What are the creative and business challenges songwriters face today where “frankenwriting” is becoming a new industry custom, streaming is the predominant form of exploitation, and 75% of songwriter’s income in the U.S. is regulated by the government through outdated consent decrees and antiquated provisions of the Copyright Act?   These songwriters discuss the challenges of being a successful songwriter in this “new music business” and what they are doing to overcome the challenges.

Additional Speaker Information

Vincent Le’Carl Berry II is Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, composer, and record producer. Along with producer and partner Timothy "Bosky" Bullock, Berry founded Press Play, Inc (@itspressplay), a fully functioning multi-media company producing, distributing, and promoting its assets throughout the world. They have placed songs with Young Jeezy, Brittney Spears, Monica, Jeremih, Chrisette Michelle, Ashanti and Gospel Icons, James Fortune and Karen Clark Sheard, just to name a few. How do you follow up a platinum recording with Brittney Spears, a #1 R&B project with Chrisette Michelle and two Grammy nods with Karen Clark Sheard and James Fortune? You work with Kanye West and Justin Beiber. Though excited about their new ventures with juggernauts, West and Beiber, PressPlay says that they are equally as excited to develop new talent. Together they have sold over 5 million records and counting, and they are just getting started. Currently, PressPlay is among the most consistently successful producers in recent years, and their accomplishments in the music industry are as diverse as they are unparalleled. This is largely because they are self- described,” non-confined” to any particular musical genre, making musical forays in Hip Hop and R&B as well as EDM, Country and Gospel music. He was born and raised on the east side of Detroit, Michigan. He currently resides in Los Angeles.

Evan Bogart has written songs for Beyoncé, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo, Enrique Iglesias and countless others. Bogart has signed and developed a stable of successful songwriters, producers and recording artists including ZZ Ward, Ricky Reed/Wallpaper, MKTO, Annabel Jones and Nova Rockafeller. Through his company Boardwalk Entertainment, he has Executive-Produced several TV shows and is working on the feature film, Spinning Gold, based on his father's life and starring Justin Timberlake. Bogart also serves as Vice President of The Recording Academy's Los Angeles Chapter.

Michelle Lewis is an award-winning songwriter (Cher, Katherine McPhee, II Volo, Little Mix) and composer (Disney’s Doc McStuffins, Nickelodeon’s Bubble Guppies) and, most recently, creators’ rights advocate. Along with fellow songwriters, Kay Hanley, Shelly Peiken and Pam Sheyne, she co-founded SONA (Songwriters of North America) - a Los Angeles-based organization of professional songwriters and composers who wish to advocate for upholding the value of their work in the digital future.

Haley Reinhart, 25, is a singer/songwriter who released her new album, Better in 2016 – the follow up release to 2012’s Interscope Records debut, which debuted at #17 on the Billboard 200 chart, while her recent single “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” was featured in the popular Extra gum commercial “The Story of Sarah and Juan.” The single also sold 201,000 units (and counting), amassed 17 million Spotify streams, and reached #1 on Spotify’s Global viral chart in 2015. In 2015, Reinhart premiered cover songs with YouTube sensation Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox which have amassed over 50 million video views to date. In addition to singing, Reinhart made her voiceover debut in 2015 as a little boy named Bill in the Netflix original animated series F Is for Family, produced by Bill Burr, Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsly, and Michael Price. In 2011, she competed on Season 10 on American Idol, eventually finishing in third place. Since then, she has seen her songs featured in a variety of other TV and film projects, including Gossip Girls, Dancing with the Stars and American Idol, James Cameron’s HBO documentary series Years of Living Dangerously, a recent Chase Bank commercial, and the film Step Up Revolution, as well as network promos for Lifetime and ABC.
