AIMP's Inside Scoop From Music Supes, V5

It's time for our music supervisor panel! This event puts together top music supervisors (and decision makers) in TV, Film, Trailers and Ads with Nashville's most successful (independent) music publishers. We're switching it up a bit this year; we will start with the panel, where music supes will discuss the clients they represent, as well as their current projects and music needs. To follow, selected performers will be showcased and receive feedback from the supes.

MIKE LADMAN - Since joining Droga5 in 2016, Mike Ladman has developed the Music Department and manages music and audio capabilities across the agency and client roster. Notably, Mike helped launch the Google Pixel phone through a music-driven campaign that won the AMP Award for Most Effective Use of Music in a Campaign. In addition, he provided all the music for the Cyber Grand Prix–winning MailChimp campaign and the Titanium Lion for Tourism Australia's Crocodile Dundee Super Bowl Campaign. Mike was recently named one of Billboard's Top Branding Power Players of 2018. Prior to joining Droga5, he was a Music Producer at McCann Erickson for nearly seven years, where he provided music for clients across the agency’s roster such as Microsoft, the United States Army, Verizon, MasterCard and more. Mike received his first film credit managing the music supervision for an indie film, Tracktown, which premiered at the LA Film Festival in 2016. In his free time, you can find Mike DJing around New York City as DJ PuppyHiccups.

JANINE SCALISE BOYD - Based in the company’s Santa Monica office, Boyd serves as the lead music executive for STARZ Original Series including “Power” and “Vida,” as well as brand marketing campaigns for STARZ Español, STARZ Westerns, STARZ Kids & Family and quarterly image and brand OTT spots. Boyd is directly responsible for overseeing all aspects of music supervision on the network, hiring composers as well as determining the scope of music licensing budgets for hundreds of projects. She works closely with production companies, major record labels, recording artists, and agents to secure talent and production materials for on-air promotional campaigns. Boyd negotiates and executes all music clearances across various production groups. Furthermore, she works seamlessly with development executives, third party producers and key counterparts to ensure the highest quality music in original programming and image campaigns. Additionally, Boyd spearheaded and continues to grow STARZ’s music publishing initiative by cultivating relationships and procuring music from artists, songwriters, music producers and composers.  Boyd joined Starz in 2005 as an Executive Assistant and single-handedly created the music department. She was promoted to VP of Music in 2015. Boyd is a frequent guest panelist for music conferences including the Whistler Film Festival, Vancouver Film Festival, MUSEXPO 2018, Association of Independent Music Publishers, ASCAP EXPO and a PROMAX CLASS, mentoring low-income students to become TV promo editors/producers by polishing their editing skills, music supervision and producing high quality promos.

CHRIS MAZUR- started his music career by selecting the Tuba as his primary instrument in grade school. At the University of Miami, he found a passion for music publishing. He decided to focus on the wide range of possibilities that come from reimagining, covering, remixing, and producing music to be synched directly to picture. Chris' career has spanned from building a recording studio and production curriculum for a private high school to licensing music for Ogilvy & Mather brands American Express, IBM, NASCAR, and UPS to name a few. Chris is now the Manager for Marketing Music at Netflix, where he focuses primarily on global original and licensed Series, Documentaries, Unscripted, and regional original titles from SLATAM & UK. In the last quarter, this includes titles such as The Black Godfather, Black Mirror, Elite, La Casa De Papel, When They See Us, Wu Assassins, and many more! In his free time, Chris is a passionate Ultimate Frisbee player and youth coach, recently winning a Gold Medal as a member of Team USA in 2016 at the World Championships.

ANDY ROSS- With over 25 years of diversified experience in the music industry, including stints as an artist manager, label chief, and publisher, Andy has access to contacts that span the globe, boasting exceptional relationships with international players across Europe, Asia, and the USA. Ross has extensive experience in music rights management and exploitation, working to craft and implement creative strategy for over 80 commercial productions (most notably Audi, Volkswagen, NFL, and PlayStation), 150 feature films, 75 soundtrack albums and numerous television shows while simultaneously growing and maximizing catalog assets for company and clients. Comfortable working with a high volume of projects regardless of budget or deadline, Andy serves as a fluent liaison between the creative talent, the director, and production executives. Mr Ross was the recipient of the 2014-2015 Guild of Music Supervisors Award for music supervision for a feature film budgeted under $5MM for his close work with director Damian Chazelle (La La Land) on his sophomore film, the three-time Academy Award winning Whiplash. Andy has recently supervised the feature films Unfriended:Dark Web and Animal Crackers, worked as music producer on the upcoming Julian Fellowes movie The Chaperone for PBS and as music supervisor on the Univison / Netflix co-production television series Tijuana. Acted as music consultant on the critically aclaimed 'Peanut Butter Falcon' and is currently working on Netflix original movie 'Last Days Of American Crime' and internet independent miniseries 'Sneakerheads'.

JAY RUSSELL- Best known for Directing critically acclaimed, audience pleasing fare, filmmaker Jay Russell has an impressive track record of telling compelling stories with emotional resonance. The Columbia University School of the Arts grad began his career making documentaries for television and landed his first feature film project “End of the Line” at the Sundance Institute Lab. The film, starring Kevin Bacon, Mary Steenburgen, Holly Hunter and rock and roll Hall of Famer, Levon Helm, was released by Sony Classics to solid reviews. In 1997 Russell met Pulitzer nominated author, Willie Morris, who had just published his beloved autobiographical memoir, “My Dog Skip.” Russell acquired the rights to the book and developed a screenplay. In 2000, Warner Bros. Pictures released the Russell Produced and Directed adaptation of “My Dog Skip”, which starred Kevin Bacon, Frankie Muniz, Luke Wilson and Diane Lane. The film was a hit with critics and audiences alike and eventually went on to score numerous awards, including the Critic's Choice Award for Best Family Film. Russell followed “Skip” with Walt Disney Studio's “Tuck Everlasting”, starring Alexis Bledel, along with Academy Award winners, Sir Ben Kingsley, William Hurt and Sissy Spacek. The well-reviewed adaptation of Natalie Babbitt’s young adult fantasy was also nominated for a Critic's Choice Award for Best Family Film of 2002. In 2004, Disney/Touchstone Pictures released “Ladder 49.” The film, an ode to the heroism of firefighters, which starred Academy Award nominees John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix. “Ladder 49” remains as one of the top October weekend openers of all time and went on to make over $100 million in worldwide box office. Next for Russell was Sony Picture's "Water Horse: Legend of the Deep," which received the Rotten Tomatoes, Golden Tomato Award as the best reviewed family film of 2008. The film became Russell's second $100 + million dollar moneymaker in a row. Russell served as a Producer for Academy Award nominee Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) on his Belfast, Northern Ireland based indie comedy, "Whole Lotta Sole," which as released in 2012. Currently, Russell is in preparation for his upcoming feature with SONY UK entitled, “So, This is Christmas."
