![]() Additional Speaker InformationRichard Burgess is the President and CEO for the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), an organization whose mission is to promote growth, awareness and opportunities for independent music. Burgess has been a major label recording artist, composer, studio musician, and artist manager. He also served as producer for many gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums. Known for his pioneering work with synthesizers, computers and sampling, he is credited as an inventor of the SDSV drum synthesizer, as well as coining the music genre terms EDM and New Romantic. Burgess also authored “The Art of Music Production: The Theory and Practice” and “The History of Music Production.” Kay Hanley is best known as the lead singer of Boston-based alternative rock band Letters to Cleo, which released three albums between 1990-2000, spawning such hits as "Awake" and "Here and Now.” After a 14-year hiatus, Letters To Cleo reunited in 2014 to appear as themselves on NBC’s Parks + Recreation. In the late 90’s, Ms. Hanley began expanding her work as a singer and songwriter, providing the singing voice for Rachael Leigh Cook's character Josie in Universal Pictures' feature film Josie and the Pussycats and performing cover versions of Nick Lowe's “Cruel to be Kind” and Cheap Trick's “I Want You To Want Me” in Touchstone Pictures' hit film 10 Things I Hate About You, a film in which Hanley also appeared on screen. The past decade has seen Kay laser-focused on a career writing and producing music for TV animation. After finishing a Peabody Award winning, five- season dream job composing music for Disney Jr’s groundbreaking hit series, Doc McStuffins, Hanley and longtime writing partner, Michelle Lewis have continued to pursue projects that inspire them. Their songs can currently be found on Disney Jr’s Vampirina and Muppet Babies, Netflix/Dreamworks’ Harvey Street Kids, Disney Channel’s Sydney To The Max, and Cartoon Network’s new DC Super Hero Girls. Ms. Hanley and Ms. Lewis are co-executive directors of Songwriters Of North America (SONA), a non-profit that advocates for the protection of songs and songwriters in the digital music marketplace. Kenny MacPherson, Founder and President of Big Deal Music Group, is one of the most visible figures in the American music business—thanks in no small part to his gregarious personality, no nonsense reputation, and a Scottish burr as disarmingly apparent as the day he arrived in the States more than three decades ago. Founded in 2011 with his longtime colleagues Dave Ayers and Jamie Cerreta, along with Michael McDonald and his Vinegar Hill/Propel Music publishing operation, Big Deal Music Group is a company that was painstakingly built on a foundation that is nimble and flexible, one that can quickly adjust to the rapidly changing music marketplace. The company has its headquarters in Los Angeles and offices in New York, Nashville and London. At Big Deal, MacPherson and his colleagues have continued their long relationships from previous companies with acclaimed artists like Ray LaMontagne, My Morning Jacket, St. Vincent, Dan Wilson, Afghan Whigs, Dave Sitek and Ethan Johns, while continuing to build their roster with artists like Teddy Geiger, John Ryan, Sylvan Esso, Kamasi Washington, Blake Mills, Brad Tursi, Sleater-Kinney, Nick Lowe, FIDLAR, Local Natives, Sharon Van Etten, Brett Beavers, Beach House, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Shakey Graves and others.
