AIMP & IMPF present: The State Of The Music Publishing Industry Post-Covid. How Are We Going To Do In 2021?

The global music publishing market is a multi-billion dollars business centred around songwriters and composers, and the publishers who represent their works. A recent report from the Independent Music Publishers International Forum (IMPF) has mapped out for the first time the economy of this sector of the global music industry, highlighting the importance of the community of independent music publishers around the world. The key findings of this report will serve as the opener for this session that will look into the world of music publishers in times of a pandemic. The event is co-hosted by IMPF and the Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) and moderated by Emmanuel Legrand, editor of the Creative Industries Newsletter.

Additional Speaker Information

Ender Atis is Chief Operating Officer for Budde Music, one of Europe’s leading independent and family-owned music companies with headquarters in Berlin and further offices in Paris, London and Los Angeles. The company group encompasses the legendary music publishing business founded in 1947, the international artist management company ‘Budde Management’ and the full-service talent agency ‘BTA’. Before joining the company in 2015, Ender had held a European strategy role at EMI Music Publishing and started his own consulting business ‘Rightslane’ afterwards, working with a diverse range of music, media and technology companies, from established majors to early-stage startups.

Michael Lau spent 7 years at Warner/Chappell music serving as the Sr. Director of Creative IT and Marketing Development, and previously the Director of Strategic Marketing. Throughout his tenure he helped build the advertising and video game division by pitching and licensing Warner/Chappell’s catalog; developed branding and marketing strategies; developed and deployed interactive promo kits; and was the designer of the company’s creative pitching system. Prior to Michael’s tenure at WCM, he was a music supervisor with credits ranging from CBS’ 94 and 98 Winter Olympic broadcast; Cartoon Network’s “Courage the Cowardly Dog”; Scholastic’s feature “Clifford’s Big Movie” to WBOL’s interactive Looney Tunes and Gotham Girls webisodes. Early in his career, Michael produced and managed a number of music libraries. Michael is a composer and a graduate of Berklee College of Music.

Michelle Lewis is a fierce New Yorker now based in Los Angeles, where she is a singer, songwriter, composer, and music creators’ rights advocate. From her early career as a recording artist signed to Irving Azoff’s Giant Records, to her first radio hit, Cher’s “A Different Kind of Love Song” in 2002, to the 2014 worldwide #1 single “Wings” by the British girl group Little Mix, Ms. Lewis brings authenticity, musicality and heart to a diverse array of music projects. For the last decade, Ms. Lewis has branched out into the world of songwriting for animated television, most notably as a Peabody Award-winning composer of all original music for Disney Jr’s hit show, Doc McStuffins and as an Emmy-nominated songwriter for the beloved Nickelodeon series Bubble Guppies. In 2014, Michelle Lewis co-founded the non-profit, Songwriters of North America (SONA) in response to the ever-increasing complexities and disparities in digital royalties paid to songwriters and composers. And most recently - through her roles on the ASCAP Board’s Legislative Committee, representing SONA and as one of the leaders of the #MusicArmy of songwriters, artists, composers and producers - Michelle was an instrumental force in the historic passage of the Music Modernization Act, which was signed into law in October of 2018.

As one of the most well-known and respected rights administration and licensing experts in the industry, Mary Jo Mennella is the owner and Founder/CEO of Music Asset Management, Inc. (MAM), a leading independent music publishing and consulting company she founded in 2006. Mennella was also a founder of Pulse Publishing Administration, a venture her company helped launch in 2014 and managed for the Pulse Music Group. For decades, Mennella has been a successful and passionate entrepreneur dedicated to rights management. With expansive worldwide relationships and broad experience, her company manages administration for a multitude of rights owners and creators, including world renowned songwriters and composers, film and TV studios, music publishers and other media companies. An accomplished musician, an advocate for creators’ rights, and a champion of songwriters, Mennella serves on the board of the Independent Music Publishers e-Licensing (IMPEL), as well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the IMPF, the International Music Publishers Forum. Mennella has also been the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s West Coast Chair since 2010. Among her many philanthropic efforts and industry affiliations, Mennella is a Past Chairman of the Music & Entertainment Industry for City of Hope and a Past President of the AIMP.
