National Director, Music (LA)

Position Purpose

The National Director of Music will oversee all aspects of the Music Department, including negotiating and enforcing contracts, supervising and developing staff and representing SAG-AFTRA in various capacities within the Music Industry. This position will work closely with the Director, Music regarding workflow both internally with support staff, business representatives and other SAG-AFTRA departments as well as externally with record labels and artist representatives. This position will develop and execute an overall Strategic Plan for the Music department.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead the SAG-AFTRA Music Department, which is responsible for negotiating and enforcing the Sound Recordings Code and Music Video Agreement and for serving as the primary advocate for singers and dancers working under SAG-AFTRA contracts.
  • Serve as co-lead negotiator of the SAG-AFTRA Sound Recordings and Music Video Contracts. Help lead the Wages & Working Conditions process and preparation of proposals for negotiations.
  • With the Director, Music, supervise and develop the staff of the Music Department, including completing performance assessments, developing plans for succession and advancement of Music Department staff, providing consistent feedback throughout the year and rewarding/disciplining employees as necessary, including staff in New York and Nashville.
  • Develop and execute a Strategic Plan for the overall Music Department.
  • Represent SAG-AFTRA at Music Industry events and initiatives and on the boards of Industry-related entities, as necessary, including the AFM SAG-AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund, the SAG-AFTRA and Industry Sound Recordings Distribution Fund and the Alliance of Artists and Recording Companies.
  • Support the Government Affairs and Public Policy team in pursuing legislation of interest to SAG-AFTRA members.
  • Participate in organization-wide leadership and culture initiatives and as a departmental representative on various internal work groups and committees.
  • Create policies and procedures within the department.
  • Initiate and maintain continuous and effective communication and coordination with all departments responsible for the contracts under which recording artists, singers and dancers work, including the Theatrical and Television contracts, the Commercials Contract, the Sound Recording Code and any other current or future contracts that are or become applicable.
  • Serve as an expert on all music-related contracts and provisions and provide pertinent contract information and interpretation both internally and externally.
  • Develop and maintain a high level of expertise on the Music Industry and other industries as they impact singers and dancers.
  • In coordination with the organizing department, develop and implement an organizing plan for recording artists, singers and dancers.
  • In coordination with various departments, lead marketing initiatives to raise SAG-AFTRA’s profile both internally and externally in the music industry.
  • Serve as staff liaison to national and local committees representing singers and dancers.
  • Represent SAG-AFTRA on industry panels and at music related industry functions.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to both develop and execute a Strategic Plan.
  • Knowledge of the music industry and its business practices (recording artist contracts, royalties, recoupment, copyright, digital services, etc.).
  • Experience negotiating and enforcing contracts or collective bargaining agreements.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to effectively manage and develop staff.
  • Existing relationships within the music industry with performers, managers, executives, etc.
  • Superlative interpersonal skills: High degree of patience and tact, and must be able to cultivate respectful, strategic, and collaborative relationships with people from diverse backgrounds both internally and externally.
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work independently.
  • Able to work under pressure while organizing and coordinating multiple tasks under daily deadlines without supervision.
  • Able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Hold yourself and others accountable for a high level of performance and integrity.
  • Must be able to work in a challenging environment where constructive feedback from others is encouraged.
  • Have an understanding and awareness of worker rights impacting SAG-AFTRA members.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined at SAG-AFTRA’s sole discretion.
  • Must be available and willing to work extended hours per day or per week, including weekends and holidays, as SAG-AFTRA determines is necessary to meet its business needs.
  • Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as SAG-AFTRA determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Education And/or Experience



  • Bachelor’s Degree with 6 - 8 years of applicable experience working with contracts in the music industry or a legal setting, or a combination of 10+ years of education and experience.
  • Must have experience supervising staff.
