Manager, Music Publishing

 

Responsibilities

Act as the primary liaison in servicing our music catalog to support the studio’s branding/franchise/marketing efforts on select company verticals, advising on ownership, licensing restrictions, approvals, AFM considerations, licensing fees, and other music rights & licensing-related matters

Coordinate the negotiation and licensing out process by acquiring licensing out requests, obtaining internal/third party approvals, researching rights, assisting SVP of music publishing with fee negotiation, issuing quotes to potential licensees, obtaining license confirmations, and acting as a resource to assist music business affairs department with drafting of licenses

Gather all AFM-related transactional licensing information and report to music business affairs department

Track all incoming publishing/master licensing revenue by maintaining/developing a database of licensing transactions containing breakdowns/reports/summaries by quarter, category and year, including forecasting domestic and international market trends and industry shifts and advise management and partners

Perform same duties as above to track estimated music licensing values for all internally licensed catalog music

Maintain a record of and act upon discrepancies to ensure accurate data, pursuing any missing backup on incoming revenue or any incomplete or inaccurate data from film/TV accounting departments

Oversee and direct publishing administrator’s management of catalog including clearance, negotiation of licensing fees/terms, PRO registrations, copyright, royalties, and counterclaims

Assist music business affairs department with gathering music documentation (e.g., cue sheets, music rights summaries, composer deals, songwriter deals, co-pub deals) and disseminate to Electronic Legal Files and Universal Music Publishing

Oversee updating of music catalog information into Counterpoint (e.g., writers, publishers, splits)

Supervise cue sheet creation 

Serve as primary liaison between NBCU intern department and Film Music Department, i.e. recruit, manage, train, and mentor departmental and intern staff

Review, analyze, and interpret a variety of agreements including synch, composer, performer, songwriter, producer, above-the-line, film distribution and production deals to determine chain of title in order to make expedited business decisions as needed

Advise and liaise with business leaders from various company divisions to aide with individual business objectives and provide strategic and/or general advice regarding music

Initiate and cultivate business relationships with inter-departmental business leaders, attorneys, ad agencies, film companies, video game companies to grow licensing business and network

Perform other related duties/projects to support departmental team as requested by management


Basic Qualifications


Qualifications/Requirements

At least 3 years experience in music licensing/music rights clearance/music copyrights field with an emphasis on music publishing, and some master recording licensing

Must be solution-oriented, team player

Extremely detail-oriented, organized, and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with individuals within Universal and in the business community; diplomacy is a must

Strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office programs with an emphasis on Excel and Access

Able to analyze information and situations and follow through with proposed solutions or alternatives, presenting them in a logical manner

Self-starter, able to learn new functions quickly and accurately

Excellent oral and written communication skills and professionalism

Familiarity with film music a plus

Trustworthy with sensitive and/or confidential information

Bachelor Degree or equivalent work experience in music-related business
