Erin M. Jacobson, Esq., A.P.C. is a top boutique music law firm in Los Angeles, CA.  The firm represents music artists, songwriters, composers, music publishers, independent record labels, managers, producers, and estates and heirs of legacy music catalogues.  The nature of the firm’s work is transactional.  We handle contractual, copyright, and publishing administration matters on behalf of clients (i.e. no litigation).

Our mission is to protect music creators, rights’ owners, and their catalogues through expert deal negotiation, intellectual property management, and advice for long term success.  Our top values are protecting our clients, honesty, professionalism, excellence in our work, expert knowledge and advice, and innovation.

We are looking for a superstar Associate Attorney who is smart, positive, reliable, detail-oriented, trustworthy, and can work independently.

Position Overview

This is a full-time, remote role, reporting directly to the firm owner/managing attorney.  Although the position is remote, the candidate must be a California resident.  There will be a brief, part-time evaluation period at the outset to ensure a good fit for both parties.

Candidates should only be interested in a long-term position with the firm.

The mission of the Associate Attorney is to:

  • be a key member of the team who supports the firm owner/managing attorney by handling associate-level matters and administrative details, allowing the managing attorney to focus her time on growing the business and making the most important contributions to her clients;
  • protect the firm’s clients by expertly, efficiently, and independently handling clients’ legal transactional and publishing administration matters; and
  • contribute to the growth of the firm.

Tasks vary from week to week and will increase in complexity based on the proficiency of the Associate Attorney.

Responsibilities Include

  • Drafting, reviewing, redlining, and negotiating music industry agreements
  • Document preparation
  • Legal and Copyright Research (mostly Internet-based)
  • Preparing copyright, trademark, and other registration applications

Knowledge and Experience:  The Associate Attorney will have three years of experience as an associate attorney in the music business, experience with music contractual matters and copyright/intellectual property registrations, and understand copyright law and the customs and practices of the music business.  Candidates without legal understanding and experience in the music industry will not be considered.

The Associate Attorney will also have a meticulous eye for detail and accuracy.

Quality Communication:  The Associate Attorney must be an excellent communicator, in both written and oral form.  This includes proficiency in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.  This also includes digesting and managing large amounts of information and summarizing it quickly both in writing and orally on a regular basis.  The Associate Attorney must also be able to track communication (and be very responsive) across multiple channels without losing any details.

High Level of Discretion:  Since our Associate Attorney will regularly work with confidential information, discretion and sensitivity regarding client and firm information is a priority.  There will be no tolerance for sharing firm or client information outside of the firm.

Competency:  The Associate Attorney must have strong organizational and planning skills, be able to work autonomously and efficiently, think strategically, solve problems, and be proactive in order to independently manage own workload and meet deadlines.  The Associate Attorney must have the ability to take direction, adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment, and anticipate the needs of the firm owner.  The candidate must also be able to competently format documents, including making sure spacing, font sizes, and other elements are correct.
