AIMP Sends Legislative Letter to Congress

The Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) has partnered with The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, Harry Fox Agency, Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), Church Music Publishers Association, Music Managers Forum – US, Songwriters Guild of America and the Society of Composers and Lyricists on a letter to both the House and Senate outlining our collective legislative priorities for the new administration.

The legislative letters cover the two main priorities for the 111 Congress:
·         Performing Right for Musical Works in Audio-Visual Downloads
o        As technology changes and blurs the line between a performance right and distribution copies, we are asking that there be parity of performance royalties on music which is included in audio visual programming that is streamed online or downloaded from a digital file.   We are emphasizing that just because a form of transmission has changed doesn’t mean songwriters should be stripped of their right to compensation.   The RIAA is supporting our efforts on this front.
·         Protections for Copyright in any Government Effort to Expand Broadband Service
o        As internet broadband service is expanded and exposing intellectual property to increased piracy, we are urging Congress to impose proper intellectual property and technological protection for songwriters and music publishers into any new legislation.
As we are all aware, the degeneration the music business and increasing disregard of intellectual property rights has put an undue strain on not only the music publishing business but the US economy. American music underscores the global culture now more than ever.   We hope by having each of our groups come together and stand strong as a single voice we can protect our rights, our industry and ultimately continue to bring music to the world.
