  • On January 15, 2021, BMI introduced a new distribution schedule to better serve their songwriters, composers and publishers. Starting in calendar year 2022, their quarterly royalty distributions will be evenly spaced apart every three months so that there is one distribution per calendar quarter, each February, May, August and November.  Read the full one-sheet here.

  • Primary Wave Music has acquired legendary recording company Sun Records. Described by Primary Wave as a “multi-million deal”, the transaction encompasses master recordings for legendary artists including Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, The Dixie Cups, and more  The buyout also includes all of the music publishing owned by Sun, as well as the iconic Sun Records logo and all other trademarks owned by Sun, including that of Nashville’s Sun Diner.  Read more about it here.

  • Tunedly, a global innovative online music production and publishing source, has announced a new partnership with Spirit Music Group, one of the world’s leading independent music publishers. Through the deal, Spirit Music Group will administer Tunedly’s growing music catalog worldwide.  Read more about it here.  
  • Music Streaming isn’t just a big part of the record business: It basically is the record business. According to RIAA data, streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube contributed 85% of all record industry revenue in the United States in the first six months of last year, up from 80% in the same period of 2019, and they’re on track to be an even bigger presence in the future.  Read more here.

  • BMI is very saddened by the passing of pioneering actress, Cicely Tyson, who broke barriers and shattered stereotypes throughout her remarkable seven-decade career. BeBe Winans, renowned Gospel singer/songwriter and Advisor to BMI, knew Ms. Tyson for over 20 years, and he recently shared his thoughts and memories of his dear friend here
