  • January 15, 2021 - BMI is excited to introduce a new distribution schedule to better serve their songwriters, composers and publishers. Starting in calendar year 2022, their quarterly royalty distributions will be evenly spaced apart every three months so that there is one distribution per calendar quarter, each February, May, August and November.  Read the full one-sheet here.

  • Primary Wave (& our LA Chapter's Indie Publisher Of The Year) has acquired the full music publishing catalog of Grammy-winning songwriter, producer and artist Dan Wilson, it was announced Thursday (Jan. 7). Wilson’s valuable catalog includes songs performed by Adele, The Chicks and his recently-reunited band Semisonic, including the Grammy-nominated 1998 modern-rock smash “Closing Time."  Read more here.  
  • The 2021 GRAMMYS® , originally scheduled for January 31st, have been postponed due to concerns over the spread of Covid-19, multiple sources confirm to Rolling Stone. In a statement released January 5th, organizers, citing “thoughtful conversations with health experts, our host and artists scheduled to appear,” confirmed that they’ll stage the award show on Sunday, March 14th.  Read more here.  
  • Songview in Review: Test-Driving ASCAP and BMI’s New Shared Data Platform - The music licensing community was intrigued by the Dec. 21st launch of Songview, a new one-stop platform presented by performing rights organizations ASCAP and BMI combining both databases for easier searchability.  Read more from our colleague Mara Schwartz Kuge here.  
  • Congress approved a new COVID Relief Package - what it means for Music Creators.  Read more here.  
  • The ASCAP Foundation and the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra (SJO) are pleased to announce the recipient of the 66th annual ASCAP Foundation/SJO Commissioning Prize. This prize was created to honor the memory of the trailblazing musician George Duke, who was the SJO Co- Music Director and an ASCAP board member. Jihye Lee (New York, NY) was selected as the recipient of the $5,000 commissioning prize and will write a new work for the 68-member ensemble.  Read more about her here
  • BMI is saddened by the news that singer-songwriter Jamie O’Hara passed away January 7th. Highly decorated for the GRAMMY-winning megahit “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days),” which was recorded by The Judds in 1986, O’Hara was also the scribe behind Ronnie McDowell’s smashes “Wandering Eyes” and “Older Women.” Early on, Don Williams also landed a hit with O’Hara’s “Desperately,” while Lee Ann Womack, George Jones, Trisha Yearwood, The Chicks, Randy Travis, Emmylou Harris, Mark Collie, Michael Martin Murphey, Tanya Tucker, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Tim McGraw, Sara Evans, Joey & Rory, The Oak Ridge Boys, Pam Tillis and Josh Turner were also stars that cemented O’Hara’s decades-long career as an award-winning songwriter.
  • SESAC is thrilled to congratulate all affiliated artists and songwriters nominated for the 63rd Annual GRAMMY® Awards.  Standing out with three nominations is SESAC affiliate Derek James Dixie, who is nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best R&B Song of the Year  for writing “Black Parade” performed by Beyoncé. Other affiliate nominations include Disclosure, Robert Glasper, Jack Harlow, Lady A, Christian Nodal, among others, in a dynamic range of genres including Dance, Country, Latin, Gospel, Rap, R&B and more.  Read more here.
