  • DOJ Holds Public Workshop on Competition In Licensing Music Public Performance Rights - On July 28 and 29, the Department of Justice held a virtual public workshop “to discuss competition in the licensing of public performance rights in the music industry.” The workshop gave stakeholders an opportunity to weigh in on the ASCAP and BMI consent decrees “and their implications for antitrust law enforcement and policy.” You can read ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthew's remarks here, BMI President & CEO Mike O'Neill's remarks here, and a transcript and recording of the workshop will be posted here once available.
  • TikTok has unveiled a multi-year agreement with the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), a leading trade organization representing American music publishers and songwriters that was founded in 1917.  The pact will not only account for TikTok’s past use of recorded works (dating retroactively to May 1, 2020), but also sets up an agreement for future usage, according to Billboard, which says that the deal establishes TikTok’s “legal legitimacy” within the music industry” by enabling the thousands of NMPA member labels to opt into a licensing framework with TikTok.
  • LA Chapter board member Erin M. Jacobson, Esq. has been named to “Billboard's 2020 Top Music Lawyers" list; congrats, Erin!  It’s well deserved.
  • ASCAP Clinches 21 Primetime Emmy Nominations -  The National Television Academy of Arts and Sciences has recognized 19 of their composers, songwriters and music supervisors with a total of 21 nominations for the 2020 Primetime Creative Arts Emmys. This year’s crop of nominees is a diverse mix of first-time nominees doing incredible work and Emmy veterans still at the top of their game.  Read more here
  • BMI is proud to congratulate all of its Creative Arts Emmy nominees with a special call out to their affiliates, Laura Karpman, Labrinth, Atticus Ross and Rickey Minor, who are each up for two awards, and to Nathan Barr, who is up for three of the coveted trophies. BMI would also like to extend congratulations to all of the music supervisors for their nominations.  Read more here
  • SESAC has partnered with other songwriter organizations to ask congressional leadership for additional relief, here and has joined music organizations on behalf of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) in a letter urging Congress to support the RESTART Act, here
